二十年後の私

二〇三一年十二月一日

今年私は国へ帰りました。二十年前にアメリカへいきました。２０１１年から２０３０年までいろいろなところへ行きました。いろいろな国にいました。たくさん外国語をならいました。はじめに日本へ日本語を勉強しに行きました。それから、ロシアにロシアごをならいに一年いました。日本語とロシア語がじょうずでしたから、トルコとロシアと中国と日本の関係のれきしを書きました。PhDがおわりました。それから、日本に二年いました。中国に二年に、ロシアに一年いました。でもつかれました。国へかえりたかったです。

今年、トルコへ来ました。トルコの一番いい大学ではたらきます。お金があまりありませんが、このせいかつがとてもすきです。

Apologies for the late post...

I was going to defend my earlier posts, but I've decided to come up with new katakana words that seem to be more interesting, and that go beyond the "textbook definition."

ヒフ科
One word that I have found is  ヒフ科, hifu-ka, which means "dermatology."

The first two characters are in katakana and the third one is a kanji. Indeed, here we have an interesting combination of kanji and katakana, when the katakana word is also a Japanese word, hence not a loan word. Here is the site that I've stumbled upon hifu-ka: http://www.hibiya-skin.com/

"Hibiya-Skin" is a clinic for dermatology (ヒフ科クリニック). What attracted my attention in this word is that ヒフ is indeed the Japanese word for skin, written as 皮膚 in Kanji. Trying to find out why a Japanese word was written in Katakana, I've ended up searching the word in the "best encyclopedia ever" - Wikipedia. Even though, the wiki page does not give a footnote, it states that it is commonplace to use Katakana instead of difficult Kanji used to express medical words (such as 皮膚).

Thus, here we have an interesting Katakana word.

And, here is the second one:

ドンマイ
Since I believe that languages are basically tools for communication, I will confess that I did not really find any place that officially employed this word (such as a newspaper, website, magazine, etc.). Instead, this is a word that a Japanese friend of mine told me. It seemed interesting and funny, because it is a weird loan word.

ドンマイ means "Don't mind!"
The interesting thing with this katakana is that it is not a loan word but a loan phrase. One Japanese friend of mine told me that it is usually the elder people saying ドンマイ to younger ones, whereas another of my Japanese friends said it was commonly used. I guess usage differs from region to region.

Having googled the word, there are of course thousands of results which can be read as a testimony to the contemporary usage of the word.

THANKSGIVINGのプラヌ

先週の木曜日に私の彼女トルコからきました。先週の木曜日に前たくさん勉強しました。でもしゅくだいをおわりませんでした。いま、せんたくがふたつあります：１）うちでひとりでべきょうします　２）そとで彼女といっしょにりょこうをします。わたしはくがつからもうたくさんべんきょうしましたから、つかれました。たのしいところえいきたいです。じゃ、このThanksgivingにニューヨークでりょこうをします。てんきもとてもいいですね。うちでひとりでべんきょうしません。
きょう、てんきわよくなしですから、NYのびじゅつかんへいきます。でも、あしたのてんきはあめじゃありませんから、Flushingへいきます。

わたしはトルコからアメリカへきました。くがつにコロンビアだいがくへきました。あたらしいがくせいです。ニューヨークはとてもおおきいです。そして、にぎやかです。　人がたくさんいます。レストランもたくさんあります。ニューヨークりょうりはおいしいですが、たかいです。だいがくいんせいですから、おかねがあまりたくさんじゃありません。まいにちレストランでたべません。うちでつくります。ひとりでたべます。

わたしのうちはおおきいです。そしてきれいです。うちでべんきょうしますから、いつもきれいです。おおきいですから、べんりです。ニューヨークのてんきはさむいですが、うちはあついです。

とうきょうはどんなまちですか。まだいきませんでした。あついですか、さむいですか。ひとがたくさんいますか。だいがくはどうですか。むずかしいですか、やさしいですか。コロンビアはあまりやさしくないですが、とてもおもしろいです。とうきょうだいがくもおもしろいですか。

Katakana Analysis Draft

I found two interesting katakana phrases used by Japanese. Instead of finding them online and then checking with my Japanese friends, I did the other way around and asked my Japanese friends first, and then checked them up again online. Here they are:

イデオロギー - ideology
スタバる - to go to Starbucks

I thought the first word is interesting, for it shows us how the Japanese borrowed terms from the West which ultimately changed their conception of the world, including that of their native land, Japan itself. "Ideology" is a word that we, today, take for granted, most of the time disregarding the historical geneaology behind it, and how it was indeed historically constructed at a given time. Therefore, words such as イデオロギー help us to become more self-reflexive in using and defining what we take as a given.

The second word is a weird combination of Katakana and Hiragana. A comment on my post suggested that the Japanese put る at the end of any word to denote action, "to go to ..." If that is so, this word actually might lose the meaning I had in mind in the first place. Nevertheless, スタバる for me is "glocalism" par excellence. The fact that "going to Starbucks" has become a colloquial term that is also manifested in written language tells us something about linguistics, where the language has become a signifier for a greater phenomenon.

I took the easier way to find some new katakana words, and asked some Japanese friends.

Here are some interesting words:

1) 　ドンマイ　- Don't mind
2)　イデオロギー - ideology
3)　スタバる - to go to Starbucks
4)　マグカップ - Mugcup

1, 2 and 4 definitely belong to the loanwords category, but スタバる does not really belong to any category at all...

じてんしゃで旅行

New York
先週の金曜日にじてんしゃでNew Yorkで旅行をしました。Queensへ行きました。前にQueensへいきませんでした。Queensはきれいですね。Jackson HeightsのHistorical Districtはとてもゆうめいです。

南アメリカ (South America)
２がつ２０１１ねん南アメリカへ (South America) 行きました。アルゼンチん(Argetina)からウルグアイ(Uruguay) へじてんしゃでいきました。はじめに、Buenos AiresからTigreじてんしゃでへいきました。TigreからウルグアイのCarmeloへふねでいきました。CarmeloでやすみましたからColonia del Sacramento へじてんしゃでいきました。Coloniaは美しいです。ポルトガル人 (Portuguese) そのまちをしました。むかし、おおきいのまちでした。いま、ちさいです。でも、きれいです。
ColoniaからLibertadへじてんしゃでいきました。Libertadでなにもきれいじゃありません。LibertadからMontevideoへじてんしゃでいきました。Montevideoはとてもきれいです。ウルグアイのしほんしです。MontevideoからPiriapolisとPunta del Esteへもじてんしゃでいきました。Beach Resortのまちがすきじゃありません。でも、PiriapolisとPunta del Esteもとてもきれいです。
Punta del Este から Buenos Airesへバスでかえりました。ひこうきでNew Yorkへかえりました。
